Message from the Chairman of the Board

Dear Fellow Andrean,

I extend my sincerest congratulations to all the members of the Board of Trustees, the golden jubilarians (Class of 1957), the silver jubilarians (Class of 1982), the alumni , school teachers and administrators and  students for making the  SAS Homecoming 2007 last Dec 27 a most memorable one.

The presence of Monsignor Manny Gabriel, Mrs. Mary De Leon Fernandez, Mrs Oliva, and the other teachers certainly added meaning to the event as we were all able to catch up on many issues concerning our Alma Mater.  The golden jubilarians for next year's homecoming, Class of 1958, came in full force and in their distinctive class attire (yellow shirts).    Some  class members flew in from abroad to join their former classmates and friends.   The picture of classmates and school mates smiling, laughing and talking aloud while reminiscing  their youthful and care free days in St. Andrew's was a most refreshing sight.

One of the highlights of the evening was the excellent presentation made by Ms Nery and Mr Nesty Moralina about the joint project of the alumni and the school on the effort of helping educate  OUT OF SCHOOL YOUTH.  The program is called the Alternative Learning System and Skills Training and the very noble overarching goal of the project is:    To empower the out-of-school and adults to continue to learn on their own so that they may improve their quality of life, that of their family, community and  country.    This project comes at a time when  our beloved country's educational profile has not been very encouraging.   Here are some Philippine education data for your information and appreciation:
First     -6.8 million Filipinos or 1 in 10 Filipinos had never gone to school
Second  -11.8 million or 1 in three children  or youth is not in school
Third -1 in every 3 entrants to Grade 1 or 33% drops out and fails to complete elementary education
And fourth -of the 100 that enter Grade 1,   58 will enter High School and 14 will become  college graduates

Given this sad state of education in the Philippines not mentioning the quality of graduates, I believe it is time for us Andreans to step up and be counted.  According to the highly esteemed SAS alumnus Bishop Chito Tagle, in his 2006 homecoming anniversary messgage, being an Andrean is not only a name but more importantly it carries with it the tasks to do something good for the community.

In this regard, may I call on all Andreans to help out.  To those who are interested to help, please make your intentions known to Nonoy Sornillo, Nesty Moralina  or to any member of the Board of Trustee.  Also, if you have some other ideas on how best to carry out the project, please let us know.  We promise you that this activity shall be undertaken  with full transparency.

May you  and your loved ones continue to receive bountiful blessings, good health and weath in 2008.  Happy New Year and we hope to break bread with you during the next homecoming in December 2008.

Pro Deo Et Patria!
